Sergei Viktorovich Schendelew ( Russian Сергей Викторович Шенделев ; born January 19, 1964 in Leningrad , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and current coach .
Career
Sergei Schendelew began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at SKA Leningrad , for which he was mainly active in the Vysschaya League , the highest Soviet league, from 1981 to 1991 . For the 1991/92 season , the defender went to North America, where he played for the Maine Mariners and New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League . For the 1992/93 season he returned to the SKA Saint Petersburg from the newly founded International Hockey League . He spent the 1993/94 season at EC Hedos Munich in the ice hockey Bundesliga and immediately became German champions with his team . The following season he began with their successor club Maddogs Munich in the first German ice hockey league and finished it with their league rivals Starbulls Rosenheim . In the following two years he was on the ice for DEL competitor Frankfurt Lions .
The 1997/98 season began Schendelew at ESV Kaufbeuren and his ex-club Starbulls Rosenheim in the DEL, but ended the season at SC Bietigheim-Bissingen in the second-class 1st League South . Also in the 1998/99 season the Russian competed in the 1st League South, which became the third highest German division after a league reform when he joined the EV Landsberg . In the 1999/2000 season , the left-handed shooter rose as the champion of the third-class Oberliga Süd with EHC Straubing in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , in which he spent the following two years with the Straubing team. The former national player last played for the second division EV Regensburg from 2002 to 2004 before ending his active career at the age of 40.
For the 2012/13 season , Schendelew began working as an assistant coach at HK WMF Saint Petersburg from the Wysschaja Hockey League , the second Russian division.
International
For Russia , Shendelev took part in the World Championships in 1993 , 1994 and 1995 . At the 1993 World Cup he won the gold medal with his team. He was also in his country's squad at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer .
