Robert von Ritter

Robert von Ritter (born June 11, 1862 in St. Petersburg , † August 29, 1945 in Unterpfaffenhofen ) was a German art historian , art collector and art patron.

Life

Robert von Ritter attended the grammar school of the " German secondary school St. Petri " in St. Petersburg. He then studied in Dorpat , Berlin and Munich . On May 17, 1888, he received his doctorate in art history in Munich and was still enrolled as a student of philosophy (art history) at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , at least for the summer semester of 1893 .

From November 22, 1893, Robert von Ritter was based in Munich (Christophstrasse 7a / 2, Pension Dümlein), where his widowed mother lived in the meantime (Giselastrasse 2). In 1896 he moved in with his mother. In April 1898 the company moved to the property at Georgenstrasse 13, which in May 1898 became the property of Ritter. He stayed there with his future wife until it was destroyed in World War II. In official documents from the imperial era, knights are always listed as reindeer .

Patrons and collectors

Robert von Ritter became increasingly involved in the arts and culture of the city of Munich . He was a "[long-term] member of the buying committee" of the Bavarian Association of Friends of Art (Museum Association). He was also a member of the Association of Friends of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München eV , whose list of members "reads like a Who's Who of Munich society in the period between the world wars". In addition to Ritter, Günther Franke, Hugo Helbing , Siegfried Lämmle, Edgar Hanfstaengl , Friedrich Oldenbourg, Reinhard Piper , Adolf Schinnerer and Emil Preetorius were members of the association (the so-called 'Circle of Friends').

Furthermore, Robert von Ritter worked as an art collector . His collection included works by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld , Joseph Anton Koch , Ernst Kreidolf , Charles Lacoste , Moritz von Schwind , among others . During his lifetime he gave parts of his collection to public institutions.

Robert von Ritter is the son of Robert von Ritter and his wife Emilie (née Gendt). The father was an Imperial Russian colonel in St. Petersburg . On June 22, 1904, Robert von Ritter married Amalie Auguste Meta von Klipstein (born August 9, 1868 in Mönchshof ; † October 5, 1955 in Munich), daughter of Leopold Engel Karl von Klipstein (born October 6, 1831 in Neckarsteinach ; † 17 July 1904 in Gießen ) and Maria Johanna Josephine von Grolmann (born November 17, 1845 in Darmstadt , † March 29, 1906 in Munich).
