Edgar Hanfstaengl (born July 15, 1842 in Munich ; † May 28, 1910 there ) was a German authorized signatory and commercial clerk .

Life

Edgar Hanfstaengl was born in Munich as the son of the photographer Franz Hanfstaengl (1804–1877) and his wife Franziska Hanfstaengl-Wegmeier (1809–1860). He trained as a commercial clerk in Szczecin and in a London wholesaler. In the early 1860s he went to Asia to work as a clerk at the tea trading company Clark. In 1866 he returned to his father's art business in Munich, where he worked as an authorized signatory. In the same year he developed a love affair with Ludwig II's fiancé , Princess Sophie Charlotte . On November 12, 1868, Edgar took over the photographic studio in Munich and expanded the business to become the art publisher Franz Hanfstaengl.

In 1882 Edgar Hanfstaengl married Katharina Wilhelmina Heine (1859–1945), who was born in Berlin. They had five children: Edgar (1883–1958), Egon (1884–1915), Erna (1885–1981), Ernst “Putzi” (1887–1975) and Erwin (1888–1914). The eldest son Edgar had been running his father's art business since 1907. After the death of her father, the only daughter Erna found an envelope with his handwritten note: “Letters from Princess Sophie Charlotte - burn unread. Edgar. ”Erna did not follow her father's request, but handed the letters over to the author Heinz Gebhardt in February 1980 in order to“ put the matter right ”.

Edgar Hanfstaengl, Sophie's “dear, dear friend”, died on May 28, 1910. He was buried in the family grave of the Hanfstaengl family. The tomb is located on the old southern cemetery in Munich (burial ground 2 - Row 7 - 37th) Location .
