Marcus Sommerfeld (born October 22, 1983 in Burnaby , British Columbia , Canada ) is a former German - Canadian ice hockey player who was active in the German Ice Hockey League for the Eisbären Berlin and the Hamburg Freezers . In the second German division he played for the Bietigheim Steelers , Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg and the Lausitzer Füchse, among others .
Career
The 1.80 m large summer field began its career in 2003 in the Canadian junior league Kootenay International Junior Hockey League . After good performances, he was signed in 2004 by Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League . In Berlin, however, the right-handed shooter could not prevail and was mainly used by the Eisbären Juniors Berlin in the upper league . Nevertheless, Sommerfeld was able to count himself to the team that won the German championship in the 2004/05 season .
Just a year later, the German-Canadian joined Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg in the 2nd Bundesliga . During his time in Wolfsburg , the then 22-year-old was closely watched by some scouts from the Hamburg Freezers . For the 2006/07 season, Marcus Sommerfeld signed a contract with the DEL club, for which he was on the ice until 2009.
In October 2009 he initially received a trial contract with SC Riessersee , which was extended to the end of the season at the beginning of November. In May 2010, Sommerfeld was signed by the Hannover Indians . He left this after the season to join the Lausitzer Füchse team in August 2011 , where he played as an offensive defender and scored 48 points in 52 games. Before the 2012/13 season , he moved to the Bietigheim Steelers . With the Steelers, Sommerfeld was three times champions of the second division under coach Kevin Gaudet - 2013, 2015 and 2018. In addition, the Steelers won the DEB Cup and three runners-up championships in 2013 . In total, Sommerfeld played over 400 games for the club from Bietigheim . After the 2018/19 season, he retired to return to Canada ( Vancouver ) to become a firefighter.
