André Rankel (born August 27, 1985 in West Berlin ) is a German ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Eisbären Berlin in the German ice hockey league . With the polar bears he was involved in seven DEL championship titles and winning the European Trophy 2010 .

Career

André Rankel started his career in his hometown with what was then Berlin Capitals , of which he was used for the first time in the German junior league DNL in 2000/01 . After two years, which he spent exclusively in the DNL, the attacker gained his first experience in the men's team of the Capitals in the regional league in 2002/03 . Although he had not yet received much Ice Age and special attention from the Capitals, the move to the eastern local rival Eisbären Berlin in the 2003/04 season was considered brave due to the great rivalry between the two clubs for the West Berlin Rankel. Here, the then 18-year-old initially was used even in the polar bear Juniors in the regional league, was in his first season already 56 inserts in the DEL and scored in his first game in the German top flight against the Wolves Freiburg his first DEL Goal. During this period, the polar bears pursued a youth concept which, in addition to Alexander Barta , was intended to establish more young players in the DEL team. In addition to Rankel, several players born in 1985, such as defenders Frank Hördler , Jens Baxmann , Tobias Draxinger and striker Florian Busch , were used in the club's first championship season 2004/05 . Rankel was the most successful goalscorer of these young players with five goals.

In the 2006/07 season he scored more than 20 points in one season for the first time, which he could not achieve in the following season due to a shoulder injury lasting several months . Through his achievements in the next season 2008/09 he was believed to have the potential of a high performer for the club, his coach at the time Don Jackson certified him in the NHL format and in the 2009/10 season he was the most successful goalscorer of the polar bears with 26 goals.

By 2011 Rankel was involved in four championships of his club, when he won the title in the 2010/11 season he was the player with the highest points in the play-offs and was voted the most valuable player in the finals. He was a little lucky that a check with an injury result in the play-off quarter-finals was not punished by the association. In the following season Rankel was suspended in the play-off semifinals for a similar offense for 10 games and could therefore no longer support his team in the finals of this series. For the 2012/13 season there was a change in the Berlin team - with Denis Pederson , Sven Felski and Stefan Ustorf , three long-standing top performers left the club. Rankel, who had taken over the captaincy of Ustorf, was the most successful scorer of his team with 68 points and led his team to the seventh DEL championship. The 2012/13 season was marked by the lockout in the National Hockey League until January 2013. As a result, Claude Giroux and Daniel Brière played with the polar bears until the lockout was lifted . Rankel later referred to these two players as the best Berlin players of all time.

In the 2017/18 season Rankel led his team to the play-off final and replaced Sven Felski as the club's record goal scorer this season. By the end of his active time with the polar bears, he achieved the record of 247 goals for the Berlin team. For the 2019/20 season , he and Frank Hördler were the team's oldest players. Although he continued to lead the Berliners as captain on the ice, he was assigned a more defensive role in the game of polar bears, which did not meet his requirements. Rankel was the captain of the Eisbären Berlin for eight years and after a total of 17 years in the Eisbären squad did not receive a new contract after the 2019/20 season.

International

At the U-18 World Cup in 2003 Rankel came to his first tournament appearance for a German national team. He also played regularly for the junior national team, including at the World Championships in 2004 and 2005 , where he was promoted to the A group again in 2004 with the team. Since 2006 he has also been part of the extended squad of the senior national team . In 2007 he played for the first time at a men's world championship and was also nominated for the 2010 Olympic ice hockey tournament in Vancouver . In total, he played more than 130 games for the DEB selection and took part in seven world championships with the national team.
