The 1930–31 NHL season was the 14th season in the National Hockey League . Ten teams played 44 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 3-2 win in the final series against the Chicago Black Hawks . Five years earlier, Philadelphia had tried to get an NHL team. What back then did not work with the Toronto team, this time with the weakest team in the league from Pittsburgh. The Philadelphia Quakers made their owner, ex boxing world champion Benny Leonard , little joy. Four wins and four draws were a meager result in their only season. A horse played an important role in the Maple Leafs. Its owner Conn Smythe won $ 15,000 with "Rare Jewel". He borrowed another $ 20,000 and sent two additional players to Ottawa to bring King Clancy to Toronto. There he became the head of the team. For the first time, an NHL All-Star Team was also elected.
