Kārlis Skrastiņš (born July 9, 1974 in Riga , Latvian SSR ; † September 7, 2011 in Tunoschna near Yaroslavl , Russia ) was a Latvian ice hockey player who played for the Nashville Predators , Colorado Avalanche , Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars during his career played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender .
Career
Skrastiņš began his playing career in the offspring of Dinamo Riga and played in the 1991/92 season for the first time for the first team of the now renamed HK Pardaugava Riga club in the Latvian ice hockey league . In the following years he played with Pardaugava in the second Russian league and in the international Russian championship . At the age of 21 he decided to move to the Finnish first division club TPS Turku . There he developed into a consistent defender, so that he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1998 by the Nashville Predators in the ninth round in 230th place.
His first NHL game he completed on February 9, 1999 against the Detroit Red Wings , where he managed an assist. He scored his first goal in the NHL on December 26, 1999 against St. Louis . By the 2002/03 season, he completed over 300 NHL games for Nashville, before he was given in exchange for a third-round draft pick to Colorado.
On February 8, 2007, he completed his 487th NHL game in a row, overtaking Tim Horton's record, who had played 486 consecutive games as a defender. Skrastiņš increased the record to 495 games, but he missed the game against the Anaheim Ducks on February 25 due to a knee injury. Previously, he had only missed a single game in his NHL career - hence his nickname Ironman .
Shortly before the end of the transfer period, on February 26, 2008, Skrastiņš moved to the Florida Panthers, who gave Ruslan Salej to the Avalanche. He spent the 2008/09 season with the Panthers before signing a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars in early July 2009 . In May 2011 the Latvian was signed by Lokomotive Yaroslavl from the Continental Hockey League .
On September 7, 2011, he was killed in a plane crash near Yaroslavl .
