Tuomas Pihlman (born November 13, 1982 in Espoo ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active for JYP Jyväskylä , Jokerit Helsinki and Ässät Pori in the Finnish Liiga for many years and was three times Finnish champion .

Career

Tuomas Pihlman began his career as a hockey player in the youth of Hyvinkään Ahmat . When he was 13 years old, he moved to Jyväskylä with his parents and from then on played for the JYP Jyväskylä youth team . In the 1999/2000 season he made his debut for the club's professional team in the SM-liiga , but was mostly used by the U20 juniors. In the following season he was part of the professional squad of JYP and established himself within the team. During the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Pihlmanin was selected by the New Jersey Devils as the 48th overall player in the second round .

In 2002 he received contract offers from several teams, but stayed with his home club at the urging of coach Matti Alatalo . In the 2002/03 season he achieved his breakthrough in the SM-liiga with 34 points scorer, while he benefited from his teammates Jarkko Immonen and Antti Virtanen , with whom he formed the so-called "VIP series". Due to the performances shown, the Devils brought him to North America, where he made his debut in the National Hockey League during the 2003/04 season , where he remained pointless in two games. The rest of the season, as well as during the lockout in the 2004/05 season , the Finn was on the ice for New Jersey's farm team from the American Hockey League , the Albany River Rats .

After two more seasons, in which Pihlman was only used sporadically for New Jersey, he returned to his Finnish homeland in the summer of 2007, where he was signed by his former club JYP Jyväskylä. There he met again Immonen and Virtanen, with whom he again formed a series and the JYP led to the Finnish Championship at the end of the 2008/09 season . Pihlman contributed a total of 67 scorer points to this success. During the following season he injured his knee in January 2010 and had to undergo an operation, so that he could only play in the playoffs again.

In October 2010 Pihlman received a contract with Jokerit Helsinki after he had not received a contract extension from his parent club in the summer of 2010. He returned to JYP Jyväskylä for the 2011/12 season.

Between April 2012 and January 2014 he was then under contract with Ässät Pori , before he returned to his hometown club. He ended his career in October 2017.

International

For Finland , Pihlman took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2000 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2001 and 2002 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 2009 World Cup .
