Career

Clubs

Donatas Kumeliauskas began his career as a hockey player in his hometown Elektrėnai with the Lithuanian record champions SC Energija , for whom he made his debut in the then Latvian league in 2003 as a 16-year-old . After three Lithuanian national championship titles with Energija, he moved to Latvian league rivals HK Liepājas Metalurgs in 2006 and a year later to DHK Latgale , for which he competed in the Latvian and Belarusian leagues for one year . In 2009 he moved to Western Europe and went to Castors d'Avignon in the French Division 1 , the second highest division in the country. After only one year he left the Provence team and moved to Kazakhstan to HK Arystan Temirtau , where he spent four years and won the Kazakh Cup in 2011 with the team . In 2014 he moved to league rivals HK Almaty , which he left again in January 2015 to end the season with the Peterborough Phantoms from the English Premier Ice Hockey League , the second highest division in Great Britain. With the team from Cambridgeshire he won the EPIHL playoffs. Despite this success, he left the Phantoms after six months and joined ECC Preussen Berlin from the German Oberliga Nord for the 2015/16 season . After a year with the Sheffield Steeldogs in the English Premier Ice Hockey League, he has been playing at CSM Dunărea Galați in the Romanian ice hockey league since 2017 , where he is also the team captain.

International

For Lithuania, Kumeliauskas already took part in the junior world championships. At the U18 World Cup in 2002 he and his team were promoted from Division III to Division II, in which he then played in 2003 , 2004 and 2005 , when he became the tournament's top scorer with eight goals and assists each. In 2003 , 2004 , 2005 and 2007 , when he led his team to promotion to Division I as the tournament's best striker, he also played in Division II of the U18 World Championships. Only in 2006 he had to compete in Division III after relegation in the previous year, a mishap that could be resolved immediately with the promotion, to which Kumeliauskas contributed significantly as the best striker of the tournament.

He made his debut in the Lithuanian men's national team at the end of 2004 in the first round of the Olympic qualification for Turin 2006 . He then played at the World Championships in 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2014 , when he was the second best scorer after his compatriot Dainius Zubrus , in 2015 and 2016 for his home country. Only in 2012 and 2013 was his name missing from the Lithuanian World Cup line-up. He also represented his colors in qualifying for the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang 2018 .
