Lukas ( plural: die Lukas ) is a male given name and family name .

Origin and meaning

The name Lukas is a short form of Lucanus, probably of Latin origin. It describes someone who comes from the southern Italian landscape of Lucania . A Roman poet is known as Lucan . If one assumes an origin from the Greek , Luke means "born into the light" (ancient Greek λευκός leukós , bright, white ').
