Tõnis Lukas (born June 5, 1962 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician .

Life

Early years

Tõnis Lukas graduated from Gustav-Adolf-Gymnasium in Tallinn (then 1st Tallinn Middle School) in 1980. Then he attended a vocational school for auto mechanics . From 1981 to 1987 he studied history at the University of Tartu . From 1987 to 1989 he was employed as a teacher in Rõngu . From 1989 to 1992 he returned to the University of Tartu as a lecturer in history.

From 1988 Tõnis Lukas became politically active against the Soviet occupation forces. He called for the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Estonia, the restoration of Estonian independence and advocated human rights, democracy and the market economy. He became known as the organizer of the opposition "Tartu Days of Monument Protection".

In 1992 Tõnis Lukas became a member of the Christian Democratic Party Isamaaliit (Union of Fatherland) and moved to Tartu City Council . From 1992 to 1995 he was director of the Estonian National Museum ( Eesti Rahva Muuseum ) in Tartu. In 1995 he was elected to the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for the first time and worked from then on as a professional politician.

In 1996/97 Lukas was Lord Mayor of Tartu, then from 1999 to 2002 Estonian Minister of Education in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Laar . From 2002 to 2007 he was again a member of the Estonian Parliament. In April 2005 he was elected as the successor of Tunne Kelam as party leader of the Isamaaliit . Since its merger with Res Publica in 2006, he has belonged to the center-right party Isamaa (formerly Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit ) that emerged from the merger .

From April 2007 to April 2011 Luke was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip Minister of Education and Research. In the 2011 parliamentary election he was re-elected as a member of the Riigikogu , but was no longer used as a minister. In 2012 he resigned his parliamentary mandate and took over the management of the Estonian National Museum again from 2013 to 2018.

He only returned to politics after the 2019 parliamentary elections and was appointed Minister of Culture in the Ratas II cabinet in April 2019 .

Private

Tõnis Lukas is married to Liina Lukas, a Germanist and literary scholar who teaches at the University of Tartu. The couple have three children (two daughters and one son).
