Lukas Mandl (born July 12, 1979 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Mandl was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 2008 to 2017 . He has been a member of the EU Parliament since November 30, 2017, succeeding Elisabeth Köstinger .

education and profession

Mandl attended elementary school in Gerasdorf near Vienna (1985–1989) and the lower school of Franklinstrasse grammar school in Vienna- Floridsdorf (1989–1993). In 1993 he moved to the commercial academy on Ungargasse (Vienna- Landstrasse ), where he graduated in 1998. From 1998 to 2000 Mandl studied commercial science at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (without a degree) and from 1999 to 2000 did his basic military service. He then began studying communication sciences at the University of Vienna in 2000 , which he completed in 2004 with the academic degree Mag. Phil. completed. Mandl has been working as a freelance copywriter since 1998. From 2000 to 2009 he worked as a freelance seminar trainer. From 2000 to 2002 he was a member of parliament for Gerhart Bruckmann, Member of the National Council . He then worked from 2002 to 2005 as a trainee for the Federation of Austrian Industries , was a consultant at Hauska & Partner International Communications in 2005 and then from 2005 to 2008 as a target group adviser for the Lower Austrian People's Party . Mandl has been a lecturer at the Vienna University of Economics since 2008, and since 2010 a member of the supervisory board of the non-profit building, housing and settlement cooperative Alpenland. From March 2010 to September 2012 he was Secretary General of the ÖVP Workers' Association ( ÖAAB ). From October 2012 until the National Council election in September 2013, Mandl worked as a personnel developer for the ÖVP. Mandl accompanies people in political competition and in 2015 implemented an international project for an Austrian software company.

From 1993 to 1999, Mandl held various functions in the student council at class, school, state and federal level, was regional chairman of the Vienna Schools Union from 1995 to 1998 and then from 1998 to 1999 federal chairman of the Austrian Schools Union. In 2003 he was chairman of the non-partisan federal youth council . After his election as a member of the federal board of the Austrian Family Federation in 2005, he was a member of the non-partisan federal parents' council from 2007 to 2010. Mandl was elected to the Lower Austrian state parliament on March 9, 2008 as part of the personality selection model of the People's Party of Lower Austria by preferential votes and has represented the Vienna area since its inauguration on April 10, 2008. Since spring 2010, he has been Gerasdorf's transport city councilor Vienna . In summer 2008 he was elected district party chairman of the ÖVP Wien-Umgebung. He was confirmed in this position in spring 2012. On March 12, 2010 Mandl was appointed General Secretary of the ÖAAB . After exactly 900 days in office, he handed over this function to August Wöginger, who is now ÖAAB General Secretary , on August 28, 2012 . In the state elections in Lower Austria on March 3, 2013, Mandl received 4201 preferential votes in his constituency Vienna-Umgebung and thus managed to return to the state parliament. There he is chairman of the European Committee after a unanimous election . At the beginning of 2014, Lukas Mandl was named the top candidate for the European elections by the ÖVP Lower Austria - he ran nationwide on the seventh place on the ÖVP election list. Priorities in Mandl's election campaign were the strengthening of the European regions and a self-confident representation of Austria in the European Parliament . In his opinion, Europe should also strengthen civil rights internally, appear externally as a “superpower for peace” and dismantle “centralism”. He received 4758 preferential votes - the fifth best result of all ÖVP candidates. At the beginning of 2015, Lukas Mandl led the ÖVP Gerasdorf in the municipal council elections in his hometown. With Mandl as the top candidate, the city party achieved the best result since the election in 1990. The ÖVP Gerasdorf is now involved in a city government for the first time, Lukas Mandl is vice mayor in a SPÖ / ÖVP coalition in the municipality. After moving to the EU Parliament as a member of the European Parliament, on December 4, 2017, he renounced the functions of councilor and deputy mayor in the town hall.

In 2000, Mandl founded the “Friends of the Schools Union” as a support association and network and is still a member of the presidium of this association. In 2003 he founded the “Platform for Children's Suffrage”, which advocated that parents should receive additional votes for their children in elections. In 2010 Mandl also founded the “Niederösterreicher für Rapid ” fan club , in which he also acts as vice president. Lukas Mandl was born as the fourth of five children to the Dutch native Victoire Mandl (née Van Ditzhuyzen) and the Styrian Harald Mandl (pseudonym: Matthias Mander ). Since Lukas Mandl was two years old, the family lived in Gerasdorf near Vienna . Mandl has been married to the lawyer Kristina Mandl (née Martin) since 2005. The two have three children.
