The Vienna Youth Church was a project of the Catholic Youth of the Archdiocese of Vienna and the first youth church in Austria. It was ceremoniously opened on October 9, 2005 by the Catholic Archbishop of Vienna , Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, in the parish church of St. Florian as part of a find • fight • follow service. In June 2016 the project was stopped for financial and organizational reasons.

history

The roots of the project to set up a youth church in Vienna go back to 2001, when, as part of the preparations for the “Metropolitan Symposium” of the Archdiocese of Vienna, considerations were made about renewed youth pastoral care in the context of the metropolis. Representatives of the Catholic Youth of the Archdiocese of Vienna were on youth church projects in Germany (and in particular the recently in Oberhausen opened Jugendkirche Tabgha attention) and started in close cooperation with the Institute for Practical Theology of the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the University of Vienna with it, a concept to develop for a youth church. In 2004, the youth pastor of the Vicariate of Vienna City, Gregor Jansen, was entrusted with the further development of the concept and the search for a suitable location. After the Minorite Church in Vienna's 1st district was initially selected as the youth church, but the owners of the church could not get used to the concept, the Vienna Youth Church has been located in the St. Florian parish in Vienna - Margareten since 2005 . Birgit Hager has been the youth church's project manager since June 2010. In June 2015, the diocesan board of the Catholic Youth in Vienna announced that it would end the Vienna Youth Church project on August 31, 2016 for financial reasons after ten years. This measure was decided unanimously in the diocesan board.

concept

In addition to the Sunday youth services “come2stay”, the offer of the youth church included an extensive program of continuous and temporary projects. According to the concept of the Vienna Youth Church, its offer does not compete with existing offers of church youth work, but wants to complement them and especially address young people who do not use other church offers: "Based on the observation that many young people have no access for various reasons To find church offers, the youth church offers inviting and low-threshold ways to get to know the faith and the community of believers. Here faith and church can be perceived by young people as interesting and relevant to life, even against social prejudices and possible negative personal experiences Increasing insignificance of church offers and forms for young people, the youth church has a clearly missionary dimension to bring young people today the Gospel and to accompany them in the search for meaning and interpretation of their own life ".

The parish church of St. Florian, built 1961–63 according to plans by Rudolf Schwarz , was adapted in 2007/08 to meet the needs of the youth church (conversion of the heating, installation of a new light and sound system, basic stage equipment, redesign of the right side entrance area). In October 2007 the BlueBox was opened in the right aisle of the church, a “youth room in the church”.
