Coat of arms of the von Rohr and Stein family after Siebmacher (1605)

Rohr und Stein (also Rhor , Rorau , Rohr von Steine or Rohr-Ratowski ) is the name of an old Silesian noble family . The family belonged to the nobility in the Duchy of Brieg . The family is extinct and not related to the Bavarian nobility of the same name von Rohr , which in modern times was predominantly located in the Margraviate of Brandenburg .

history

The family with Eberhard von Rorow is mentioned for the first time on September 22nd, 1277 in a document from Breslau as fideles ( lat. Faithful) of Duke Heinrich of Silesia . With the knight Lorenz Roraw , who appeared in a document on January 19, 1435 as Marshal of the Bishop of Breslau , the uninterrupted line of tribes began .

Symon Rorow, ducal-Silesian captain of Trebnitz , acquired the Rathe estate near Trebnitz in the Duchy of Oels in 1317 , which remained in the family until the 16th century. At times this line also bore the name Rohr-Ratowski.

In the 15th century, Medzibor , the new ancestral seat, was acquired. Melchior von Rohr had the church built in Medzibor in 1481. This property also included the stone estate, which members of this branch added to their name. The secured trunk line of the line begins with Georg von Rohr und Stein (* around 1560, † 1618). Georg Moritz von Rohr und Stein was governor and from 1688 owned Altwasser in the Waldenburger Bergland , where he built the first bathing facilities. At the beginning of the 17th century Albrecht von Rohr was appointed to the state in the Duchy of Schweidnitz and Jauer and envoy of Duke Heinrich Wenzel von Oels - Bernstadt in Prague . David von Rohr died in 1629 as the imperial and ducal chief chancellor of Münsterberg , Oels and Bernstadt .

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows six (3: 2: 1) red shingles or bricks in silver. On the helmet with the red-silver helmet covers , between two fallen and twisted fish, silver on the right and red on the left, there is a golden cross.

Heraldic saga

The ancestor of the Silesian von Rohr family is said to have been an imperial captain and heroic soldier around the year 1100 who was supposed to conquer the fortress of Wudzin (or Bushin) in Croatia, which was held by the Turks for a long time. He did his job as he was the first to venture onto the walls of the fortress, allegedly pulling out some bricks himself. To his eternal memory, the broken bricks were incorporated into the shield in the position in which they had fallen, but a cross was placed on the helmet as a testimony that he had wrested the fortress from the enemies of the cross. This cross is held by two dolphins, which are supposed to represent the cunning and urgency in his act.
