Johann Georg Theodor Grasse (also Johann Graesse , also Grässer; born January 31, 1814 in Grimma , † August 27, 1885 in Niederlößnitz ) was a German bibliographer , legend researcher and literary historian .

Life

Johann Georg Theodor Grasse was the son of the German pedagogue Johann Gottlob Grasse (1769–1827). After attending the Princely School in Grimma , he studied philology as well as philosophy and archeology at the University of Leipzig from 1833 under Johann Gottfried Jakob Hermann , where he received his doctorate in 1834 . Then Grasse went to the University of Halle and continued his literary studies .

In 1837 Grasse began work on a large-scale literary history, the four-volume textbook of a general literary history of all known peoples of the world , which was to encompass the history of poetry as well as specialist literature from all scientific and artistic disciplines. After the failure of his habilitation plans , he settled in Dresden , where he became a teacher of French language and literature at the Kreuzschule in 1838 .

In 1842 Grasse submitted a German translation of the Gesta Romanorum , followed by an edition of the Legenda aurea in 1843–1846 .

Because of his knowledge of languages ​​and literature, he was appointed private librarian to the Saxon King Friedrich August II in 1843 until his death in 1854. In the same year the Bibliotheca magica et pneumatica appeared , a bibliography on publications on magic , miracles and superstitions , taking into account witch and devil literature .

In 1848 he was appointed inspector (from 1877 director) of the Dresden Coin Cabinet .

In 1855 one of his main works in the field of legends was The Treasure of Legends of the Kingdom of Saxony with around 1000 legends. In 1861 he was appointed director of the Dresden Porcelain Collection and, in 1864, until his retirement in 1882, he was appointed director of the Green Vault .

In 1868/1871 the saga of the Prussian state appeared with 2206 sagas, evidence of older literary sources, some with the indication Oral .

Grasse owned Wackerbarth Castle in Niederlößnitz, where he died three years after he retired on August 27, 1885.
