Peter Christen Asbjørnsen
Peter Christen Asbjørnsen (born January 15, 1812 in Kristiania , † January 6, 1885 ibid) was a Norwegian writer , forester , scientist and collector of Norwegian fairy tales .
Life
Asbjørnsen was born in Kristiania, but its roots were in Gudbrandsdalen , an area with a rich folk tradition. As a student he met Jørgen Moe , with whom he traveled all over Norway, collecting and recording folk tales. They published them from 1841 onwards. Inspired by Jacob Grimm , they tried to reproduce what they had heard as true to the original as possible, thereby making a contribution to the Norwegian language. The publications of Asbjørnsen's collections were widespread and strengthened Norwegian national consciousness. But then Asbjørnsen ended this activity and worked as a forester from 1858 to 1876. In addition, he wrote numerous scientific papers.
His portrait adorns the Norwegian 50 kroner banknote.
