Ola Solum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ola Solum (born July 17, 1943 in Oslo , † June 28, 1996 there ) was a Norwegian film director , screenwriter and actor . He had success in his home country with children's films , but also the thriller Orions belte .

Life

Solum was born in Oslo in 1943 as the son of the pianist and music teacher Hans Solum (1912–1980) and the secretary Rosa Seierstad (1918–1979). After graduating from the Hartvig-Nissen School in Oslo in 1962, he began his career in the film industry. First he worked as a freelancer and then from 1964 to 1968 as an employee of Norsk Film A / S. He wrote screenplays for Norsk Film and directed various documentaries. At the same time, he also made his first documentaries for other studios.

In 1968 he worked on Bare et liv - historien om Fridtjof Nansen , a Soviet-Norwegian coproduction about the polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen , as an assistant director. In 1976 he filmed the fairy tale The Journey to the Poinsettia with Reisen til julestjernen . The children's films Operasjon Cobra and Carl Gustav followed, gjengen og parkeringsbandittene . In 1983 he made the documentary Camera is running! .

He celebrated his breakthrough in 1985 with the thriller Orions belte , which was based on the original of the same name by Jon Michelet . A Norwegian and an English version of the film was shot in parallel, shot by shot. The film was a huge success in Norway and won the Best Picture and Best Actor categories at the first Amanda Awards in 1985 . The unusual film financing , in which foreign investors were also involved, is considered to be a decisive change in direction in the Norwegian film industry .

The next film turnaround was financed with the exorbitantly high budget of NOK 28 million at the time, but it fell through with criticism and at the box office. Only with tramps and the children's film Der Eisbärkönig was Solum able to build on earlier successes.

Solum was awarded the Sølvklumpen film prize three times , in 1978 for Operasjon Cobra , in 1982 for Carl Gustav, gjengen og parkeringsbandittene and 1986 for Orions belte .

Ola Solum's first marriage was from 1964 to the television producer Wenche Thorud. The marriage later ended in divorce. Since 1986 he lived with the film producer Hilde Berg , the couple married shortly before Solum's death from cancer in 1996.
