action

When the father of the shepherd Jan is dying, he tells his son that after his death the property of the entire family will pass to the usurer. During Jan's childhood, the plague had destroyed the entire flock of sheep in the family, so the usurers helped them and, when the father died, demanded the entire family property. Only a heart-shaped ruby remains for Jan; Jan was given this cradle by a mysterious stranger and was said to bring him luck one day.

Jan sees his chance come when Princess Agnes promises the hand as well as the fulfillment of a heart's wish to the one who guesses the three things she is thinking of; anyone who fails is turned to stone. When Jan is attacked by two robbers on his journey, whom he had previously caught desecrating the grave, a mysterious stranger comes to his aid. Together they travel to Princess Agnes and are followed by the thieves. On his journey, Jan met a demon several times who wanted to steal his ruby, which his travel companion was able to prevent.

When Jan reaches the castle, Agnes' father shows him as a warning the men who have already guessed wrong and have been turned to stone, and tells him that an alien power has taken possession of his daughter when she was 16 years old. Jan is seized with fear, but his travel companion urges him to face his task. During the night, the traveling companion follows the princess to the den of the demon, who draws on the life force of men turned to stone and needs the ruby to attain eternal life. He is the same demon who, in different guises, tried to steal the ruby from Jan.

With the help of his travel companion, Jan manages to guess correctly twice. On the third night Jan follows the princess into the cave; there it comes to a fight between him and the demon. Jan defeats the demon and finds the third correct solution the next morning: love. Jan wishes that all petrified men should come back to life. While Jan's wish comes true, the demon itself turns into stone. Jan becomes king and marries Agnes. The travel companion sees that Jan no longer needs him and leaves him.

Reviews

“A very nice film with many changing locations and some magical components; the humane attitude is translated into imaginative scenes that convey the philosophical content in symbols. The exciting and turbulent story finds an atmospheric conclusion in a general festival of reconciliation. "
