Otto Kreibaum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Kreibaum senior (born January 24, 1902 in Bisperode ; † November 18, 1985 in Lauenstein ) was an entrepreneur.

The son of master saddler Christian Kreibaum and older brother of Friedrich Kreibaum leased a cabinet maker in Lauenstein in 1928 . With two employees and an apprentice, he started the production of small furniture. A water wheel with an output of ten hp was the only aid.

Shortly after the economic crisis, he discovered a niche in the market, began series production of dining rooms in 1931 and soon employed 100 people. Two years later, 300 employees worked in shifts. In 1937 there were more than 500 employees who now also manufacture bedrooms in series. In 1940 a major fire destroyed all bedroom and plywood production.

During the Second World War, production could only be continued under the most difficult circumstances. After the end of the war, the rebuilding began, and in 1947 the main manufacturing facility was back. Instead there was now a shortage of raw materials. Otto Kreibaum, however, made a virtue out of necessity and developed the chipboard extrusion process, with which he could continuously manufacture tubular chipboard for furniture production. His company was later called OKAL ( Otto Kreibaum from Lauenstein ). After the process was patented, he founded his own mechanical engineering company in order to be able to manufacture presses himself. Since this material was also excellently suited for building houses, further thought and investment were made in this direction. The first OKAL house in Lauenstein was built from tubular chipboard in 1953, before serial production of OKAL prefabricated houses began on August 1, 1959. This laid the foundation for today's company.
