Gudbrandsdalen ( German  Gudbrandstal ) is Norway's longest valley with a length of around 320 km . It extends from south-east to north-west through the Fylke Innlandet . The river Gudbrandsdals-Lågen flows through the entire length of the valley. Gudbrandsdalen as a landscape includes the municipalities of Lesja , Dovre , Skjåk , Lom , Vågå , Sel , Nord-Fron , Sør-Fron , Ringebu , Øyer , Gausdal and Lillehammer , i.e. the area around Lillehammer and east of it. The lakes Lessö-Verks-Vand , Lösna-Vand and Mjøsa as well as the villages of Dovre, Dombås , Hundorp, Vinstra and Håga and the towns of Otta and Lillehammer are located in Gudbrandsal . The Europastraße 6 (E6) leads through the Gudbrandstal. In addition, the Dovrebane runs from Oslo to Trondheim as an important traffic connection in the south-north direction .

history

The name Gudbrandsdalen is said to have been derived from the Viking chief Dale-Gudbrand, whose court still stands as a cultural center in Hundorp . Legend has it that Dale-Gudbrand submitted to the entire Gudbrandsdal valley by riding through the entire valley with a torch in one day.

  • 1015 - Gudbrandsdalen is in the Heimskringla of Snorri Sturluson mentions
  • 1349–1350 - The population halves during the plague .
  • 1537 - As a result of the Reformation , the king takes control of the church property. The Krone thus becomes the largest landowner in Gudbrandsdalen.
  • 1612 - A Scottish mercenary army under George Sinclair is stopped by the local population in the Battle of Kringen.
  • 1670–1725 - Most of the royal property is sold to meet war debts and provides the basis for the formation of a new local upper class.

Gudbrandsdalen in culture

The figure of Peer Gynt from Henrik Ibsen 's stage drama of the same name is said to have stayed and lived in Gudbrandsal. A memorial stone for Peer Gynt is in Vinstra , his alleged farm in Håga .

The Norwegian composer David Monrad Johansen (* 1906; † 1979) named his Suite No. 2 for piano "Frå Gudbrandsdalen" (Eng. "From the Gudbrands Valley").

Sigrid Undset's trilogy of novels Kristin Lavransdatter (1920/22), for which she received the Nobel Prize for Literature, is set to a large extent in the Gudbrands Valley.

The valley is also famous for its brown sweet whey cheese made from goat and cow milk, the Gudbrandsdalsost (East = cheese).
