Jørgen Moe

Jørgen Engebretsen Moe (born April 22, 1813 in Hole , † March 27, 1882 in Kristiansand ) was a Norwegian writer and Lutheran clergyman . He is best known for the folk fairy tale collection Norske Folkeeventyr , which he edited together with Peter Christen Asbjørnsen .

Life

Moe was born on a farm in the municipality of Ringerike in Fylke Viken . During his school days he met Asbjørnsen, with whom he shared an interest in Norwegian folklore . The Ringerike local history museum is now located in the former school building and also deals with Moe and Asbjørnsen. After graduating from high school in 1830, Moe studied theology.

In 1840 he published a collection of chants, folk songs and verses. From 1841 he made regular trips through southern Norway, on which he gained impressions. The Folkeeventyr appeared from 1841 and was revised and reissued several times until 1870.

In 1845 Moe became professor of theology at the Krigsskolen . Later he decided to pursue a career as a pastor and in 1853 became a chaplain in Sigdal near Kristiania . There he got the inspiration for his most famous poems. In 1863 he moved to Drammen , where he became pastor in the Bragernes district. From 1870 he was pastor in Vestre Aker until he became bishop of the Agder diocese in 1875, based in Kristiansand . In 1882 he resigned from office for health reasons and died a little later.

In addition to the fairy tale collections, Moe also published religious poems and the children's book I Brønden og i Kjærnet . In 1881 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Saint Olav .

His son Moltke continued his work in the field of fairy tales and became professor of folklore at the University of Oslo .
