action

The floating picture

An old mother wanders through the wide winter landscape. A Chinese scroll floats gently from the golden-blue sky right in front of the old woman's feet. Little Ivan, a golden curly boy, trudges through the meter-high snow. He frees forest animals from traps. A moose runs away thankfully. There comes a ruler with his retinue - they hunt - one of the scissors hits the boy. But the little one tears the madman off his horse. The prince asks why Ivan freed the elk from the net. The boy bravely replies that no animals are allowed to be hunted on Christmas Eve. The wild hunt ends with a laugh, the riders leave. But Ivan is led by a lynx to the wise old man's wooden house. You give Ivan his firewood. He gets the strange picture role from her. On New Year's Eve, the little one asks a fortune teller in the village about his future and in the crystal the vision of the grown-up Ivan and the picture role opens up:

Ivan

Ivan has grown into a handsome blond young man. He lives with his poor mother in a small wooden hut and is there to help. On the wall there is a beautiful picture of a rose-colored Chinese girl. Then the rich farmer of the village comes and demands that Ivan marry his fat daughter or that the mother has to pay the debt. Ivan refuses to trade. The rich man rages and seizes. Ivan sits thoughtfully alone. Suddenly it is as if the girl in the picture is moving. And suddenly the beautiful Chinese girl descends in person to Ivan. Happy the two begin to dream. The girl shows herself to Ivan and then steps back into the picture. At first he thinks he has dreamed. But then the girl begins to weave precious fabrics to help Ivan and his mother in their poverty.

Xiao Qin

The beautiful Xiao Qin tells Ivan her unusual story: she lived as a child in a modest village and her family painted lanterns. It was then that Yuan Pa, a cruel ruler, learned of Xiao Qin's beauty, desired her to be a wife, and sent her parents lavish gifts. But the girl feels fear and disgust for the ugly old man, in whom she already sees the raven figure of a cruel magician. The girl is complaining. Her younger brother, Wan Lun, is painting a portrait of Xiao Qin. And he paints it with so much love that the girl's soul connects with this picture. When the evil magician picks up Xiao Qin, he takes hold of a listless body shell from which life is increasingly disappearing. From the sage Lao Chun, the angry man learns that the girl's soul has saved herself in a picture. The evil one wants to force this to happen: Xiao Qin's village is devastated and set on fire, and her parents are killed. But Xiao Qin's brother escapes with the scroll. The image floats away from Wan Lun's hands and swings into the blue expanse. So it gets to Ivan.

separation

Through his sage, Lao Chun, Yuan Pa learns of Xiao Qin's stay with Ivan. He flies into the village as a raven and frightens Ivan's mother with delusions until she hands him the scroll. Ivan realizes the misfortune with horror. He sets out to find the picture girl again. Behind the picture, Ivan's mother found a magic shell with glowing pearls. The old woman in the forest interprets these pearls as Xiao Qin's lifetime - if the pearls go out, the girl can no longer be saved. She shows Ivan the way and urges him to hurry.

Way and temptations

On the way, Ivan observes a robbery. When nothing else helps, he decides to intervene and save the life of the noble family, but he is stabbed. After two months, Ivan wakes up in a prince's castle - he saved the life of the royal family. The prince wants to keep him with him. But Ivan is shocked to see that two pearls of Xiao Qin's shell have already gone out. He rides on quickly. On the green mountain, Ivan falls under the spell of a mountain fairy . She wants to keep him for the sake of his beauty. Ivan loses consciousness, but his memory of Xiao Qin brings him back to life and he leaves the beauties of the mountain fairy with a miracle dagger. But Xiao Qin's pearls have already gone out. Ivan wanders and comes to the Great Wall of China . He manages to climb it. But he falls on the other side and gets into a waterfall. An angry young Chinese man finds the unconscious: Why does the stranger have his sister Xiao Qin's shell jewelry? But Ivan happily recognizes the brother of his loved one. Wan Lun reports that Xiao Qin's picture was stolen from the wizard. Together, the two of the robber gang can steal the picture again.

palace

Ivan and Wan Lun arrive at the Palace of Evil. Here lies the beautiful Xiao Chin without life like a wax doll. Ivan and Wan Lun are discovered and caught. They demand to be led to the girl and shortly before the last pearl is extinguished, the presence of Ivan and the image-pearl magic bring together Xiao Qin's body and soul and save her. But Ivan, Wan Lun and the wise man are imprisoned and sentenced to starvation, while the evil one now harrasses the living beauty.

Escape

Xiao Qin distributes a sleeping draft to the palace guards. Ivan, Xiao Qin, Wan Lun and old Lao Chun manage to escape. But the raven magician catches up with them. After a wild fight, the bad guy seems to prevail when Ivan remembers the mountain fairy's magic knife. With this, the four of them can finally free themselves from the evil Yuan Pa.

Ivan and Xiao Qin

While Wan Lu joins the liberated wise Lao Chun and becomes his student, Ivan leads his beautiful woman back to his wintry country and the two have a happy wedding.

material

The filmed fairy tale relates to the storyline of the Norwegian fairy tale From the Golden Castle, which hung in the air from the collection of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe - here, as in the magic portrait film, the fairytale hero first meets the princess in the picture. And when he finds her in person, the princess is in a Snow White- like sleep of death, but of incomparable beauty: red as blood and white as snow. Before the princess is freed, there is a fight with a terrifying troll who, like the wizard in the film, has superhuman powers. In contrast to the Norwegian fairy tale of the castle in the air, the motif of the picture princess is even more complex in the film. In the film, the image comes alive as in the Greek Pygmalion myth and the girl steps out of the picture role to meet her lover. Only when the picture is stolen are the lovers separated and Ivan has to go on a dangerous search. Even if the picture scroll with Xiao Qin shows a Chinese girl and the style is reminiscent of the somewhat cloudy painting style of Chinese ink painting, there are still images similar to Japanese prints : Here one should think of the pictures of the beauties of girls by Goyo Hashiguchi , e.g. B. the picture of the girl combing her hair. The exotic aspects of the Asian fairy tale world in the magic portrait film are also influenced by the Sindbad pictures by Edmund Dulac . The village of Ivans is reminiscent of Ivan Bilibin's snow pictures .
