From 2011 to 2017 Lukas Beckmann was a member of the board of GLS Treuhand. His duties included u. a. the socio-political further development of the gift and foundation system.

Life

Beckmann grew up in Wilsum on the border with the Netherlands as the son of a farmer and initially also worked as a farmer on his parents' farm. He obtained his higher education entrance qualification through the second educational path and studied sociology at the universities of Bonn and Bielefeld from 1973 to 1978 . With a diploma thesis on the concept of work from the perspective of anthroposophically oriented social science, he completed his studies at the Bielefeld Faculty of Sociology in 1978.

In the 1970s Beckmann was active in environmental and third world groups as well as in Christian youth work and was committed to Amnesty International . In 1978 he was one of the initiators of the Bielefeld Colorful List. He was involved in the Free International University founded by Joseph Beuys and was one of the initiators of the coordination committee of the peace movement . There he waged a fierce fight against members loyal to Moscow and activists with a social democratic stance.

In 1979 - even before the founding of the green party - he took over the European election campaign as the full-time federal manager of the SPV die Grünen . After the transformation into a political party, he retained the position of federal managing director until 1984.

Lukas Beckmann 1983

On May 12, 1983 Lukas Beckmann, Petra Kelly , Gert Bastian , Roland Vogt and Gabriele Potthast unveiled two banners on Alexanderplatz in East Berlin with the inscriptions “The Greens - Swords to Plowshares ” and “The Greens - Now Begin: Disarmament in East + West ”to demonstrate for disarmament in East and West and at the same time to support the independent peace movement in the GDR. Even afterwards Beckmann maintained close contact with the GDR opposition , which met with fierce resistance within the Green Party - especially from Dirk Schneider  , who was later exposed as an employee of the Stasi . He later occupied the German embassy in Pretoria to demonstrate against apartheid .

From 1984 to 1987 he was together with Jutta Ditfurth and Rainer Trampert one of the three equal federal board spokesmen of the party. Beckmann, together with Eva Quistorp , Norbert Kostede , Helmut Wiesenthal and Brigitte Berthold , formed a conservative, real-political counterweight to the fundamentalist radical ecologist Ditfurth and the eco-socialist Trampert in the party that was shaped by wing battles . Beckmann performed his work as spokesman for the federal board on a voluntary basis and lived on unemployment benefits during this time . When in 1987 he brought a coalition with the CDU into play as an alternative in terms of power politics, he came under heavy pressure from within the party and decided not to run again. The position as federal board spokesman was the only internal party electoral office that Beckmann ever held.

In 1986 Beckmann prepared the establishment of a party-affiliated foundation and in 1988 co-founded the association Mehr Demokratie . He is a member of its board of trustees. Until 1991 he worked as the founding managing director of the Heinrich Böll Foundation .

From 1991 he worked for the Bundestag group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. After the Greens succeeded in re-entering the Bundestag as a parliamentary group in the 1994 general election , Beckmann became parliamentary leader of the green parliamentary group . He held this position for 16 years.

From March 2011 to March 2017, Lukas Beckmann was a member of the board of GLS Treuhand . Lukas Beckmann retired on March 1, 2017.

Together with the Green politician Wolfgang Wieland , he resigned from the support association of the Stasi memorial in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen , which both of them had co-founded, in protest in 2018 . The reason for this was a newly elected member of the foundation's board, whom they accused of being close to the AfD .

Beckmann is married and has two children.
