from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lukas or Lucas Watzenrode the Elder (* 1400 in Thorn im Kulmerland , Prussia , † 1462 in Thorn) was a citizen and trader in Thorn. He was the father of the Prince-Bishop of Warmia Lucas Watzenrode the Younger and grandfather of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus .

Life

The family came from Wazygenrode , later Weizenrodau in Silesia. The father, who lived in Seglergasse, was registered in the Thorner Bürgerbuch as a landowner, businessman, judge, city councilor, etc. Watzenrode married Katharina von Rüdiger in 1436. The Thorner Bürgerbuch shows that he and other Thorner were called to court in Limburg in 1448 . During the Prussian War of Cities, like other citizens, he granted financial support to the city of Thorn.

Lukas and Katharina had a daughter named Barbara. She married Niclas Koppernigk. One of the four children, who originally had the same name as their father, became famous as an astronomer, although that describes only part of his activities.

Katharina's sister Christina married Tideman (Tilman) von Allen, a respected patrician family also in Thorn. Christina and Tidemans daughter Cordula Allen married Reinhold Feldstedt, which in 1468 in Danzig was born and died in Danzig in 1529th Their daughter Katharina Feldstedt married Herman Giese, born in Danzig in 1523. The well-known Bishop of Warmia, Tiedemann Giese , was a descendant.
