Tiedemann Bartholomäus Giese (born June 1, 1480 in Danzig ; † October 23, 1550 in Heilsberg ) was a Catholic theologian, Bishop of Kulm and Bishop of Warmia .

Life

The person Tiedemann Gieses is connected to the milieu of Nicolaus Copernicus . He is one of the great astronomer's few friends. His brother Hermann Giese was married to the daughter of a cousin of Copernicus.

Giese came from the German patrician family Giese , who had lived in the Hanseatic city of Danzig since the generation of his great-grandfather, who came from Unna . His brother Georg Giese ran the family trading company. Giese was appointed to the cathedral chapter of Danzig at the age of 24. Together with Mauritius Ferber he was priest at St. Peter and Paul , in 1517 he was appointed official . Six years later Giese came to Frauenburg , the seat of the Diocese of Warmia, as cathedral curator . In 1538 he was given the office of Bishop of Kulm , which he held until 1549. During his tenure, the historian Lucas David served as Chancellor. In 1549 Giese was promoted to Prince-Bishop of Warmia. Bishop Giese was responsible for ensuring that Warmia , which came under the protection of the King of Poland in 1466, remained Catholic, in contrast to the rest of Prussia at that time. Nikolaus Kopernikus bequeathed his writings to Tiedemann Giese and bequeathed his library to the Cathedral Chapter of Warmia. A son of his brother Georg Giese gave Conrad Dasypodius a portrait of Copernicus from his uncle's estate for the Astronomical Clock in Strasbourg , which served as a template for the painter Tobias Stimmer , which gives the Strasbourg portrait a certain authenticity.

Prince-Bishop Giese was buried next to his relative and friend Nikolaus Copernicus in the Frauenburg Cathedral .
