from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conrad Dasypodius (* 1530/1532 in Frauenfeld ; † April 22/26, 1600/1601 in Strasbourg ), actually Konrad Hasenfratz or Rauchfuß , was a Swiss mathematician and astronomer , son of Petrus Dasypodius (around 1490–1559, actually Peter Hasenfuss or Peter Hasenfratz), humanist and lexicographer.

Life and work

In 1568 he published a work on the heliocentric theory of Nicolaus Copernicus , Hypotyposes orbium coelestium congruentes cum tabulis Alfonsinis et Copernici seu etiam tabulis Prutenicis editae a Cunrado Dasypodio . It is unclear whether Dasypodius fully accepted Copernicus' theory or rather the "Wittenberg interpretation".

Dasypodius was responsible for the astronomical clock in Strasbourg Cathedral , which was built by Isaac Habrecht and Josias Habrecht from 1572 to 1574 . From Dr. Tiedemann Giese Dasypodius received a portrait of Copernicus from the estate of Bishop Tiedemann Giese as a template for the painter Tobias Stimmer .
