Mauritius Ferber (* 1471 in Danzig ; † July 1, 1537 in Heilsberg ) was a Catholic theologian and Bishop of Warmia , who made a significant contribution to the fact that Warmia remained Catholic in contrast to the surrounding Prussian areas.

Life

Mauritius Ferber came from an influential patrician family that had moved from Westphalia to the Hanseatic city of Danzig , his father Johann Ferber and brother Eberhard Ferber were mayors of Danzig. Mauritius Ferber completed long stays abroad, first in England, then for many years in Italy. In his native Danzig in 1498 he caused a family feud about an engagement to Anna Pilemann, which extended to the entire patriciate of Danzig and also occupied the papal court. In 1507, Eberhard brokered a reconciliation, while Mauritius converted to the clergy and soon received several benefices . He became papal chamberlain , notary, canon in Warmia, of Lübeck, Reval and Dorpat, pastor of Mühlbanz near Dirschau, in 1512 of St. Petri in Danzig, and in 1514 supreme pastor of Danzig in St. Marien . On September 3, 1515 he received his doctorate in both rights in Siena .

Due to the fall of his brother Eberhard in 1522, Mauritius Ferber also had to leave Danzig. The King of Poland nominated him in January 1523 for the Duchy of Warmia , whose administration he took over in the same year. During the peace negotiations in Krakow in 1525, he defended his exempte diocese against the wishes of the new Duke of Prussia and the King of Poland for secularization. He managed to bring the diocese back to prosperity after the administration of his predecessor and the aftermath of the last war. He zealously initiated ordinances against evangelical doctrine, which had the desired effect everywhere except in Elbing . Since he had been affected by a stroke since 1531 , a coadjutor was sought, but was only found shortly before his death in 1537 with Johannes Dantiscus .
