List of Scaliger castles

Castello Scaligero in Sirmione

The Italian noble family of Scaliger had fortified numerous castles and cities in their domain, despite their temporary appearance. The castles are geographically distributed east of Lake Garda , along the pre-Alps between Verona and Bassano del Grappa and in the Po Valley south of Verona.

The swallowtail pinnacles are characteristic, but they were also generally in use in northern Italy. The most impressive Scaliger castle can be named Sirmione , a moated castle on an island in Lake Garda with a fortified port entrance.

Particularly noteworthy are the bridge fortifications, especially the Scaliger Bridge at Castelvecchio in Verona , the residence of the Scaliger. The Mincio received a unique fortification system : a barrier wall connected several castles and at Valeggio sul Mincio a fortified bridge was built below the castle.
