Life

Lukas von Breda the Elder, also known as Lucas van Breda or Lucas de Breda, was born on April 18, 1676 in Stockholm, Sweden. His parents were the portrait painter Pieter von Breda from Brabant, who immigrated to Sweden, and Alida Hidding. He received his training as a portrait and history painter in the Martinus Mijtens art group .

In 1697 he made his first trip abroad. In 1704 he traveled to France via Germany and the Netherlands , where he studied the style of the portrait painter Nicolas de Largilière and achieved a high degree of virtuosity. In 1712 he returned to Sweden. His portraits were sought after, and he painted several high-ranking personalities. His pictures are characterized by strong and precise drawing with the dominant colors of lacquer red or violet. This clearly set him apart from his Swedish colleagues.

He married Elisabeth Buchholtz in 1718. Through his marriage, he became the owner of a silk weaving and dyeing factory, which took up a lot of his time. After 1725 there were almost no paintings by him. His son is Lukas von Breda, who is also known as a painter, the younger and his grandson is the famous portrait painter Carl Frederik von Breda .
