Lukas Grünenwald (born February 5, 1858 in Dernbach (Palatinate) , † January 29, 1937 in Speyer ) was a high school teacher and local researcher who dealt intensively with the history of the Palatinate .

Life

Lukas Grünenwald from South Palatinate attended the Latin school in Annweiler , the grammar school in Landau (Palatinate) and did his military service as a one-year volunteer with the 9th Infantry Regiment "Wrede" in Würzburg . There he also studied classical philology and history; completed his studies with the state examination in Munich and later did his doctorate. In Würzburg he joined the Catholic student union Normannia in KV .

On April 1, 1885, the teacher began his professional activity as a high school assistant in Speyer. Then he was transferred to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ( Kurfürst-Ruprecht-Gymnasium ), where he was promoted to high school teacher on January 1, 1889. In 1895 Grünenwald returned to Speyer. Here he became a grammar school professor in 1898, vice rector in 1913, and on September 1, 1918 rector and headmaster. On April 1, 1920 he was promoted to senior lecturer level, on August 1 of the same year he became senior director of studies and with effect from April 1, 1923, Lukas Grünenwald retired. His home community of Dernbach made him an honorary citizen on December 11, 1925. He belonged to the church council of the Speyer cathedral parish (factory council).

Lukas Grünenwald was buried in Speyer on February 1, 1937. Bishop Ludwig Sebastian and members of the cathedral chapter as well as the Mayor of Speyer, Karl Leiling, attended the funeral .

Lukas Grünenwald was very interested in history and worked as a local historian. He was one of the co-founders of the Speyer museum building association , from 1896 to 1903 he worked as a curator at the Palatinate Historical Museum. The teacher was a member of the board of the Palatinate Historical Society for many years; in 1903 he was made an honorary member there; as a full member he worked in the Palatinate Society for the Advancement of Science. Grünenwald eagerly wrote articles for the local history publications Palatine Museum , Palatina and communications of the Historical Association of the Palatinate . From 1889 to 1896 he was editor of the Palatinate Museum magazine . In addition, from 1907 to 1914, the teacher managed the grammar school and district library in Speyer as a librarian, which later formed the basis for today's state library.

Grünenwald gave numerous lectures on local history, wrote more than 200 book reviews and at least as many articles on all areas of local history. His specialties included the Palatinate church history and folk customs as well as old handicrafts. He gave an interesting description, for example, of the ash burning in the local forests, which he knew from his own experience.

Lukas Grünenwald was friends with the pastor Heinrich Georg Rung , who was also interested in local history , his Normannia federal brother from the common Würzburg student days, with whom he also shared the same place of birth. He gave him the funeral oration on February 25, 1931, in the presence of Bishop Ludwig Sebastian von Speyer and the Palatinate District President Theodor Pfülf , in the Ramberg cemetery.

Commemoration

On the occasion of Lukas Grünenwald's 150th birthday, an official ceremony took place in his home village of Dernbach in 2008. A place was named after him, the “Dr. Lukas-Grünenwald-Platz ".
