Vincent Lukas (also written: Lucas ) was a Dutch sculptor of the 16th century .

life and work

Lukas was a well-known sculptor from Friesland . He was probably a student of the monogrammist Benedictus Gerbrandts ("BG"). As a sculptor, he mainly worked on tombstones, which he provided with rich decorations in the early Renaissance style . So far it is unclear how Luke was influenced by Flemish . The place Franeker where Lucas worked, was known for his craftsmanship. The masters Vincent Lucas and Claes Jelles worked here. Starting from Friesland, Lukas worked as far as East Friesland .

Among other things, he created two grave slabs with depictions of the dance of death , which are now in the church at the rear . The grave monument for Junker Aeildt Vrese in the Uttum church is also attributed to him. Here, too, the monogram “VL” is incorporated above the dance of death. "The imposing tombstone of the van Adrichem family from 1556, with the signature of the Frisian sculptor Vincent Lucas, can be seen under the organ of the academy building" in Leiden . In 1550, a large grave slab of Lukas was worked on in the church of neighboring Burgwerd.
