Lukas Jenni

Lukas Jenni (born June 6, 1955 in Basel ) is a Swiss ornithologist .

Life

Jenni was already interested in bird studies as a teenager. After the Matura examination of type A (that means: with Greek and Latin) he studied biology at the University of Basel . In 1979 he took over the management of the ringing center at the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach . In 1984 he wrote his doctoral thesis with the title The importance of mass infiltration and mass sleeping places in the winter ecology of the mountain finch: Fringilla montifringilla . In 1994 his book Moult and Aging of European Passerines was published , which is one of the standard works on the moulting of European songbirds. At the beginning of 2020, he published a revised and expanded second edition in collaboration with Raffael Winkler. In 1995 he received the Stresemann Prize of the German Ornithological Society for his research on bird migration . In 1996 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the metabolic processes in migratory birds with the title Ecophysiology of energy storage and energy utilization in birds during migration at the University of Zurich , where he taught from 1997 as a private lecturer and from 2013 as a full professor . In 2006 he was elected an Honorary Fellow by the American Ornithological Society . In 2000 he was elected Scientific Director of the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach and in 2008 he was also appointed Chairman of the Institute's Management. He retired in mid-2020.

Lukas Jenni is a member of the International Ornithological Committee and was on the executive committee from 1998 to 2006. He lives in Sempach , is married to the ornithologist Susanne Jenni (née Eiermann) and has two children.
