Pernod is an aniseed from France and a brand of the spirits group Pernod Ricard with an alcohol content of 40 percent by volume .

history

The doctor Pierre Ordinaire sold his recipe for absinthe to Major Dubied in 1797 . He founded an absinthe distillery in Switzerland with his son-in-law Henri-Louis Pernod . In 1805 Henri-Louis Pernod founded a second distillery in Pontarlier and the Pernod Fils company was founded. Due to the ban on absinthe in 1920, Pernod's recipe was significantly changed to its current type and no longer contains wormwood .

In 1975, Pernod merged with its competitor Ricard to form the Pernod Ricard company.

Manufacturing

In contrast to aniseed schnapps pastis, Pernod is made with distilled herbal essences. Pastis, on the other hand, is a “top-on”, so herbs are steeped with alcohol ( maceration ). In addition to aniseed essence, Pernod is also seasoned with essences made from mint , fennel , coriander and other herbs.
