Jorge Basadre Grohmann

Jorge Basadre Grohmann (born February 12, 1903 in Tacna , Chile , † June 29, 1980 in Lima, Peru) was a Peruvian historian .

Basadre became known for his extensive publications on the independence of Peru. Basadre was twice Peruvian Minister of Education and was director of the Peruvian National Library (Biblioteca Nacional del Perú).

Jorge Basadre was born in Tacna in 1903 as the seventh and last child of the married couple Carlos Basadre Forero and Olga Grohmann Butler y Pividal. He began his education in 1908 at the Lyceum Saint Rose in Tacna. In 1912 the family moved to Lima. Basadre attended the German School there and in 1918 the Colegio Nacional Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
