The district of Ite is located in the province of Jorge Basadre in the Tacna region in the extreme southwest of Peru . The district was established on June 12, 1961. It has an area of ​​848.18 km² (according to other sources 825 km²). The 2017 census counted 2822 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2980, in 2007 it was 3299. The district administration is based in Ite with 772 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ite is near the mouth of the Locumba River in the Pacific Ocean . Other places in the district are Las Vilcas (420 inhabitants), Pampa Baja (267 inhabitants), Quebrada Honda (578 inhabitants) and Villa Militar El Eden (329 inhabitants).

At the mouth of the Río Locumba there is a large wetland area (Humedales de Ite). The mining company SPCC has been using it as a tailings landfill since 1960 .

Geographical location

The district of Ite is located in the south of the province of Jorge Basadre. It has an approximately 30 km long coastline and extends about 28 km inland. The Río Locumba flows through the district in a south-south-west direction. The ridges of Cerro El Papal (up to 1778  m high) and Cerro Meca Grande limit the area to the west and east. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) from Moquega to Tacna runs along the northern district border. The area with little precipitation consists mainly of desert. The district of Ite borders in the west on the district Ilo , in the northwest on the district El Algarrobal (both in the province Ilo , region Moquegua ), in the north on the district Locumba and in the east on the district Sama ( province Tacna ).
