The Sama district is located in the Tacna Province in the Tacna region in the extreme southwest of Peru . The district has an area of ​​1115.98 km². The 2017 census counted 3,227 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2,017, in 2007 2,387. The district administration is based in Las Yaras , on the west bank of the Río Sama 4 km north of the national road 1S ( Panamericana ).

The Sama district is located in the southwest of the Tacna Province. It has a length in the NE direction of 40 km and a width of about 30 km. The Panamericana forms the northern boundary of the district. The district extends over an approximately 36 km long section of the Pacific coast . The Sama district consists almost entirely of desert. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced along the course of the Río Sama. The Sama district borders on the Jorge Basadre province to the west, the Inclán district to the north and the Tacna district to the east .
