The Ticaco District is located in the Tarata Province in the Tacna Region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on November 12, 1874. It has an area of ​​356 km². The 2017 census counted 622 residents. In 1993 the population was 1403, in 2007 it was 815. The district administration is located in the 3277  m high village of Ticaco with 578 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ticaco is located 3 km northwest of the provincial capital Tarata .

Geographical location

The Ticaco District is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the central northeast of the Tarata Province. The Río Ticalaco, the upper reaches of the Río Sama , flows through the district in a predominantly southern direction. The Río Mauri flows east along the northern district boundary.

The district of Ticaco borders in the southwest on the district Héroes Albarracín , in the west on the district Sitajara , in the northwest on the district Susapaya , in the north on the district Capazo ( province El Collao ) and in the southeast on the district Tarata .
