The Tarata district is located in the Tarata Province in the Tacna region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​878 km². The 2017 census counted 3736 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4099, in 2007 it was 3626. The district administration is located in the provincial capital Tarata, 3068  m high, with 2860 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Tarata district is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the central east of the Tarata province. The Río Mauri flows east along the northeastern district border . The west of the district is drained to the southwest via the Río Sama .

The Tarata district borders in the southwest on the Héroes Albarracín district , in the northwest on the Ticaco district , in the north on the Capaso district ( El Collao province ), in the northeast on Bolivia , in the south on the Palca district ( Tacna province ) and in the southwest the Tarucachi district .
