The district of Capaso , alternative spelling District Capazo , is located in the province of El Collao in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on September 29, 1988. It has an area of ​​1041 km². The 2017 census counted 1216 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1313, in 2007 it was 1830. The district administration is located in the 4400  m high village of Capaso with 115 inhabitants (as of 2017). Capaso is located 122 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Ilave .

Geographical location

The district of Capaso is located on the northeast flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the extreme southeast of the province of El Collao. The Río Ilave (also Río Huenque) drains the area to the north. The Río Maure runs along the southwestern district boundary to the east. In the south of the district rises the 5075  m high mountain Huancure (or Wanq'uri).

The district of Capaso borders in the south on the districts Tarata and Ticaco (both in the province Tarata ), in the west and in the north on the district Santa Rosa , in the east on the district Pisacoma ( province Chucuito ) and in the southeast on the municipality Catacora ( Bolivia) ).
