The Santa Rosa district is located in the El Collao province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was founded on May 2, 1854. It has an area of 2694 km². The 2017 census counted 3701 inhabitants. In 2007 the population was 6663. The district administration is based in the 3960 m high village of Mazo Cruz with 1070 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mazo Cruz is located 73 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Ilave .
Geographical location
The Santa Rosa district is located on the northeast flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the central south of the El Collao province. The Río Ilave (also Río Huenque) crosses the east of the district in a northerly direction and drains the area. In the southwest the district extends to the lake Laguna Vilacota and its drainage Río Maure . There the 5568 m high mountain Larjanco rises.
The district of Santa Rosa borders in the southwest on the districts Susapaya ( province Tarata ) and Candarave ( province Candarave ), in the west on the district Carumas ( province Mariscal Nieto ), in the north-west on the district Acora ( province Puno ), in the north on the district Conduriri , to the east to the districts of Huacullani and Piscacoma (both in the province of Chucuito ) and to the south to the district of Capaso .
