The Acora District (alternative spelling Ácora District ) is located in the Puno Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was founded on May 2, 1854. The Acora district has an area of ​​1941.09 km². The 2017 census counted 22,961 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 29,420, in 2007 28,679. The administrative seat of the district is the 3867  m high town of Acora with 3295 inhabitants (as of 2017). Acora is 6 km from the west bank of Lake Titicaca , just under 30 km southeast of the provincial and regional capital Puno .

Geographical location

The Acora district is located in the Altiplano west of Lake Titicaca in the extreme southeast of the Puno province. It has a maximum longitudinal extension in SSW-NNE direction of 94 km. It stretches from Lake Titicaca in the north to the Cordillera Volcánica watershed in the south. The area is traversed by the Río Blanco and Río Grande, which are part of the river system of the Río Ilave . This runs in parts along the eastern district border. The national road 3S from Puno to Ilave runs through the district past the city of Acora.

The Acora district borders in the east on the districts Ilave , Conduriri and Santa Rosa (all in the province El Collao ), in the south on the district Carumas ( province Mariscal Nieto , region Moquegua ), in the west on the district Pichacani and in the north-west on the Platería district .
