The Municipio Catacora is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality Catacora has a size of 610 km² and is one of two municipalities in the province of José Manuel Pando and is located in the southwestern part of the province. It borders the Republic of Peru to the west and the municipality of Santiago de Machaca to the southeast, east and northeast .

The municipality has 43 localities ( localidades ), the administrative seat of the municipality is Catacora with 548 inhabitants in the northern part of the municipality. ( 2012 census )

geography

The Municipio Catacora is located at an average altitude of 4500  m southwest of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The municipality of Catacora has a semi-arid climate, as the rainfall for more than six months is insufficient for the vegetation to grow.

The mean annual temperature of Catacora is around 8 ° C (see climate diagram Charaña), the annual precipitation is only 300 mm. The region has a distinct daytime climate, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 5 ° C from June to July and 10 ° C from November to January. The monthly precipitation is between less than 10 mm in the months May to October and about 50 mm from December to March.
