About the work of Arno Gisinger

Clock collection at the Oradour memorial site in France (1994)

In his work, Arno Gisinger deals with questions of the representation of history and memory in visual media with a focus on photography. For him, history is a mode of representation that always refers to questions of the present. Methods and stylistic elements of the documentary influence his photographic works, which are sometimes combined with texts. Intensive research work precedes the thematically oriented series. Since the 1990s, Arno Gisinger has repeatedly dealt with the aftermath of the Second World War and the Shoah in Europe, thereby indirectly referring to the possibilities and limits of how photographic images can be represented. Due to his training at the Photo Academy in Arles, his artistic career is strongly influenced by French thought models as well as by a transdisciplinary opening of the medium. In his mostly large-format, installation works, Arno Gisinger increasingly uses new image technologies and incorporates the unconventional exhibition spaces directly into the work process.
