The Susapaya district is located in the Tarata Province in the Tacna region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on October 26, 1954. It has an area of 359 km². The 2017 census counted 545 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 969, in 2007 848. The district administration is located in the 3390 m high village of Susapaya with inhabitants (as of 2017). Susapaya is located 17 km northwest of the provincial capital Tarata .
Geographical location
The Susapaya district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northwest of the Tarata province. The Río Yabroco, upper reaches of the Río Salado, drains the southwest of the district south to the Río Sama . Lake Laguna Vilacota (Laguna Ancocota) is located on the northern border of the district. The lake is drained to the east along the northern district boundary via the Río Mauri .
The district of Susapaya borders in the southwest on the district Sitajara , in the west on the district Candarave ( province Candarave ), in the north on the district Santa Rosa ( province El Collao ) and in the southeast on the district Ticaco .
