Francis Zammit Dimech (born October 23, 1954 in San Ġiljan ) is a Maltese politician of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), who was among other things a member of the House of Representatives , Foreign Minister and Member of the European Parliament .

Life

Member of Parliament, State Secretary and Minister

Francis Zammit Dimech studied law at the University of Malta , graduating in 1979 with a doctorate in law (LL.D.). He then worked as a lawyer and was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives (Kamra Tad-Deputati) as a candidate for the nationalist party PN ( Partit Nazzjonalista ) in the election on July 4, 1987 in constituency 9 . He was also a deputy member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe between October 1, 1987 and May 4, 1992 . On May 5, 1990, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Communications in the Fenech Adami II cabinet and was a member of this until February 27, 1992. In the election on February 22, 1992 , he was re-elected to the House of Representatives and now represented the PN in constituency 10.

In the Fenech Adami III cabinet , Zammit Dimech took over the post of Minister for Transport and Communications on February 27, 1992 and held the post until March 29, 1994, after which Michael Frendo became his successor. As part of this cabinet reshuffle, he replaced Michael Falzon as Minister for the Environment on March 30, 1994 and held this post until October 28, 1996. In the election on October 26, 1996 he was re-elected to the House of Representatives and represented the PN now until August 3, 1998 in constituency 9. He was also re-elected to the House of Representatives in the election on September 5, 1998 and represented the PN until March 10, 2003 in constituency 9. He held the office of environment minister from September 8, 1998 to April 13, 2003 also in the cabinet of Fenech Adami IV .

In the election on 14 April 2003 re-elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until 4 February, 2008. On April 15, 2003, he took over the post of Minister of Tourism (Minister for Tourism) in the Fenech Adami V cabinet , which he was a member until March 22, 2004. He then served as Minister for Tourism and Cultural Heritage in the Lawrence Gonzi I cabinet between March 23, 2004 and February 4, 2008 .

Foreign Minister and Member of the European Parliament

Francis Zammit Dimech was re-elected for the Partit Nazzjonalista in the election on March 12, 2008 as a member of the Kamra Tad-Deputati and was a member of this until the dissolution of parliament on January 7, 2013. After a reshuffle, he took over as successor to Tonio Borg on 28 November 2012 the post of Secretary of State (Minister for Foreign Affairs) in the Cabinet Lawrence Gonzi II and held that office until March 13, 2013. Also in the election on March 11, 2013 he was elected for the PN as a member of the House of Representatives and was a member of this until May 1, 2017.

After Therese Comodini Cachia resigned on June 23, 2017, Zammit Dimech succeeded as a member of the European Parliament on June 24, 2017 and was a member of the European Parliament in the eighth legislative period until July 1, 2019. He was a member of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and during his parliamentary membership he was a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs, a member of the delegation for relations with the Palestinian territories and a member of the delegation to the from 11 September 2017 to 1 July 2019 Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean . He was also a member of the delegation for relations with the Maghreb states and the Arab Maghreb Union from 29 November 2017 to 1 June 2019 .
