In the elections for the House of Representatives on February 22, 1992, the ruling Partit Nazzjonalista was able to assert itself with 127,932 votes (51.8 percent) and received 34 seats in the parliament, which had been reduced to 65 seats. The opposition Partit Laburista (PL) of former Prime Minister Carmelo "Karmenu" Mifsud Bonniċi received 114,911 votes (46.5 percent) and now has 31 MPs. Fenech Adami then formed his third cabinet. The Partit Laburista under its new chairman Alfred Sant received 132,497 votes (50.7 percent) and was able to have 35 MPs in the House of Representatives, which was enlarged to 69 seats. The PN in turn received 124,864 votes (47.8 percent) to unite and got 34 seats. Thereupon Alfred Sant Fenech replaced Adami as prime minister and formed his cabinet on October 28, 1996 .
