The Maltese Cabinet Mintoff I was formed on March 11, 1955 by Prime Minister Dom Mintoff of the Partit Laburista (PL). It replaced the third cabinet, Borg Olivier , and was in office until April 26, 1958.

history

Dom Mintoff (1974)

In the elections to the House of Representatives on February 26 and 28, 1958, the previously ruling Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) of Prime Minister Ġorġ Borg Olivier suffered a defeat and only received 17 of the 40 seats in parliament. Mintoff's Partit Laburista, on the other hand, was able to gain four seats and had an absolute majority in the House of Representatives with 23 seats.

After talks about the sovereignty of the administration of Malta with the British government failed, the GWU ( General Workers Union ) called a nationwide strike, which ended on April 18, 1958 in clashes between workers, police and units of the British Army . Thereupon Prime Minister Dom Mintoff of the Partit Laburista (PL) resigned on April 26, 1958, while Borg Olivier, as opposition leader, rejected the formation of a transitional government.

The islands were then directly administered by the British Governor of Malta , Lieutenant General Robert Laycock . It was not until March 3, 1962, after the elections of February 17 and 19, 1962, that Borg Olivier formed his fourth cabinet .
