history

Gerald Strickland (1930)

In the elections to the House of Representatives on August 7 and 9, 1927, the ruling Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) of Prime Minister Ugo Pasquale Mifsud suffered a defeat and won only 13 of the 32 seats in the House with 14,321 votes (41.5 percent). Strickland's Constitutional Party received 14,290 votes (41.5 percent) due to the transferable individual votes, however, 15 seats. The Partit Laburista (PL) under Michael Dundon got 5,011 votes (14.5 percent) and lost four of its seven seats, so that it was only represented with 3 seats in parliament. In addition, one non-party was a member of the House of Representatives. Then the Strickland cabinet was formed by Gerald Strickland, since a coalition of the other parties represented in parliament was out of the question.

After the Amery-Milner Constitution , named after Leopold Stennett Amery and Alfred Milner, 1st Viscount Milner , which had guaranteed Malta's self-rule since 1921, was suspended due to a political-religious dispute between Strickland and the Catholic Church in June 1930 , Strickland acted with his ministers only as advisor to Governor John Philip Du Cane and, since June 1931, to Governor David Campbell . This suspension of the right to self-government lasted until the beginning of June 1932.

From the elections for the House of Representatives on June 11 and 13, 1932, the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) of former Prime Minister Ugo Pasquale Mifsud emerged as the strongest force. With 28,777 votes (59.6 percent) she won 21 of the 32 parliamentary seats and thus eight seats more than in the last election on August 7 and 9, 1927. The Constitutional Party Stricklands achieved only 15,023 votes (31.1 percent) and lost five of its 15 seats, so that it was now represented by only 10 members in parliament. The Partit Laburista (PL) also won only 4,138 votes this time (8.6 percent) and lost two of its three seats, so that it was only represented in the House of Representatives by its new party leader Paul Boffa . In the 1932 elections, the pro-Italian group around Mifsud won, who then formed his second cabinet on June 21, 1932 .
