John Philip Du Cane

Sir John Philip Du Cane KCB (born May 5, 1865 in South Kensington , † April 5, 1947 in Westminster (London) ) was a British general and governor of Malta .

Life

Born in 1865 to Sir Charles Du Cane of Braxted Park and Georgiana Susan Copley, daughter of John Singleton Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst , Du Cane entered the Royal Artillery in 1884 . He took part in the Second Boer War and was given command of the artillery of the British 3rd Infantry Division in 1911 . At the beginning of the First World War , Du Cane , who has meanwhile been promoted to brigadier , served on the staff of the III. British Army Corps . In 1915 he was promoted to major-general and transferred to the high command (General Headquarters) of the British armed forces. After a brief assignment in the Ministry of Munitions in 1916, he took over command of the XV in the same year. Corps. In this role he played a key role in the preparation of Operation Hush , the planned occupation of the Belgian coast. The operation was canceled after the Third Battle of Flanders .

After the end of the war, Du Cane was appointed Master-General of the Ordnance in 1920. In this role he was responsible for the artillery, fortifications, supplies and transport as well as the medical service of the British Army. In 1923 he took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, supreme command of the Western Command , but in the following year he was given command of the British Army of the Rhine , which he held until 1927. That year he became Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta. In 1931 he retired.

From 1926 to 1930 Du Cane was also Aide-de-Camp General to the British King. Introduced in 1910, this aide-de-camp was a military honorary title for senior British generals. His duties were of a ceremonial nature, a military or advisory function was not associated with this office. Du Cane was also a member of the Grand Priory in the British Realm of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem . He was married to Ethel Georgina Mary Chapman . In the 1930s, Du Cane was a lobbyist for Anglo-South African mining companies.
