Cabinet Mifsud I
The Maltese Cabinet Mifsud I was formed on September 22, 1924 by Prime Minister Ugo Pasquale Mifsud of the Maltese Political Union (MPU) and later the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN). It replaced the Buhagiar cabinet and was in office until August 1927.
history
In the House of Representatives elections on June 9 and 10, 1924, both Gerald Strickland's Constitutional Party (CON) won 8,172 votes (34 percent) and the Maltese Political Union (MPU) of the previous Prime Minister Francesco Buhagiar with 6,553 votes (27 , 2 percent) 10 seats each in the 32-member parliament. The Partit Laburista (PL) under its chairman William Savona was able to provide 7 MPs with 4,632 votes (19.2 percent), while Enrico “Nerik” Mizzi received 4,188 votes (17.4 percent) for the Democratic Nationalist Party (DNP) Reached 5 mandates.
First Prime Minister Buhagiar continued his government as a minority government before he resigned on September 22, 1924 and became a judge at the Supreme Court. Thereupon the previous finance minister Ugo Pasquale Mifsud took over the office of prime minister and formed a coalition with the DNP Mizzis, whereby this government only had 15 of the 32 mandates. On the other hand, the CON Stricklands was not ready to form a coalition with the PL Savonas. Immediately after taking office, Mifsud underscored the claim to Maltese self-determination by moving the prime minister's residence from the Governor's Palace to the Auberge Aragon , which remained the prime minister's residence until March 1972.
In 1926 the MPU Mifsuds and Mizzis DNP merged under the name Nationalist Party ( Partit Nazzjonalista ) and both politicians became co-chairs of the new party. In the elections on August 7 and 9, 1927, however, the PN suffered a defeat and with 14,321 votes (41.5 percent) could only achieve 13 of the 32 seats in the House of Representatives. Strickland's Constitutional Party received 14,290 votes (41.5 percent) due to the transferable individual votes, however, 15 seats. The Partit Laburista got 5,011 votes (14.5 percent) and lost four of its seven seats, so that it was only represented with 3 seats in parliament. In addition, one non-party was a member of the House of Representatives. Then the Strickland cabinet was formed by Gerald Strickland, since a coalition of the other parties represented in parliament was out of the question.
